Deadly tornadoes hit southeast – 128 dead in Alabama
A strong series of severe storms hit the southeast on Wednesday causing widespread damage to 5 southern states and the death of almost 200 people. The hardest hit was Alabama where 128 individuals lost their lives as the storms spawn tornadoes and wind damage across the state. At the current count 128 people in Alabama have been killed across the state. The small town of Tuscaloosa has 32 of those deaths when a Tornado ravaged the city.
Alabama’s governor Robert Bentley and his staff will be touring the stricken areas later to day to fully access the impact to the state’s citizen and to access the economic impact the storms will have on the state. Alabama like many states has recently been hard hit by the recession and while this damage will cause a short term boost in job creation around the state many homeowners are not in a position to weather storms of this magnitude. Insurance is always nortiously slow to pay in these situations and that will cause hardship for many who have lost jobs or income because of the stagnant economy.
President Obama declared a state of emergency for the stricken areas of Alabama late Wednesday which will provide a mechanism for the state to request federal funds to help clean up the damage. The actual costs of the storms is still to be determined but with the widespread damage it will likely be in the millions in Alabama alone.
Portions of north Georgia where also hard hit by these storms and a few deaths have been reported in Northern Georgia. The system is still not completed is destruction as many counties in Georgia are still under Tornado Watches or warnings. Southern Georgia, Seminole county, had reports of a tornado touching down in Seminole county. Damage caused form this reported tornado is still nto known and hopefully there where no other fatalities with this system.
